FOSTERING AND PRESERVING QUALITY JOURNALISM

The panel will discuss issues relevant to journalism in the digital age. As the media landscape evolves, questions arise as regards trusted news and online disinformation, and notably on how the Code of Practice on disinformation should evolve. Similarly, algorithms challenge traditional editorial roles and responsibilities, posing wider ethics and transparency challenges. When it comes to media freedom, which continues to underpin quality journalism, the EU recently adopted a whistleblower directive. Are further safeguards to protect journalistic sources and freedom of expression needed?

The panel will discuss how to create an enabling environment for European media content to flourish given the current challenges faced by industry players. Fostering innovation and media partnerships whilst developing frameworks that are fit for purpose in the current media landscape remains a priority. What could be the role for the EU and regulators thereof? Building on existing EU programmes, is the development of a broader media policy strategy for the media a possible course of action?

How should these concerns inform ongoing policy debates on how to modernise competition policy for the digital age?
